The Native Hawaiian Legal Defense and Education Fund (NHLDEF) was founded in 2005 to safeguard the civil rights of Native Hawaiians. It achieves its mission by:
Providing oversight of federal, state, and local policies, laws and programs to ensure equal protection, access, participation and beneficial outcomes for Native Hawaiians.
Ensuring that public dollars affecting Native Hawaiians are distributed in an equitable manner.
Promoting voter registration and public policy education in Native Hawaiian communities.
Litigating cases to support self-determination, community empowerment and equality in employment, education, health and housing for Native Hawaiians.
Coordinating public policy initiatives and litigation actions with other minority legal defense funds.
